The Modern Day making of Kiffa Beads in the Town of Kiffa - Mauritania

古老的毛利塔尼亚琉璃珠色彩斑斓,具有浓郁的异域风情,这种珠子又是如何制作成的呢?



第一步:制作珠形。
将透明玻璃瓶子用石头砸碎。

Step 1 - Making the Core Bead
A clear glass bottle is placed under a plastic bag ( for safety ) on the ancient concave grinding stone and broken into small fragments with a round-topped stone.
In the bowls can be seen previously finished spherical core beads of different sizes, awaiting decoration or firing. To the right are new plain coloured beads, awaiting grinding into powder for the different colours of the decorations and a plastic kettle containing
gum arabic diluted with water .. finished beads are shown below left.



The plastic bag is removed and the glass fragments are further ground into a fine powder.

粉碎玻璃后,添加少量的稀释阿拉伯树胶到玻璃粉末中,通过双手掌心滚动将粉末揉成玻璃球。然后,以木制的鸡尾酒棒在玻璃珠核心穿一个洞。

A small amount of the diluted gum arabic is added to the powdered glass and a
spherical core is shaped by rolling a small amount of the paste mixture between the palms of her hands. A hole is then pierced through the core with a wooden 'cocktail stick'.

第二步:装饰珠身。
   塑料瓶盖作为容器,装着其它颜色的粉状玻璃。添加数滴阿拉伯树胶,混合成糊状,作为有颜色的色料。

Step 2 - The Decoration
Using the plastic lids of small bottles containing powdered glass from previously ground coloured beads .. as containers, a few drops of diluted gum arabic are added from the kettle to a little of the coloured powder which is mixed into a paste. Saliva, said to have been used in older times, on its own or in conjunction with gum arabic .. is no longer used.
First using blue for the centre of the 'eye', the paste is applied with the tip of a wooden 'cocktail stick'. No time is seemingly needed for drying between forming the core and applying the various coloured decorations .. the colours neither smudge nor run.

A circle of red - from ground-up Moroccan Prosser beads - is drawn around the white.
The rest of the spaces on the sphere are filled in with yellow.
Black dots are applied over the yellow and the bead is ready to be left to dry for 8 hours before firing. Note that although the decoration using different colours was a continuous process .. none of the colours have smudged nor are any residues apparent on her fingers.

第三步:烧制。
准备一个金属锅,锅的底部有一些透气孔,并铺上湿润的砂子。然后,将绘制好的珠子放在砂中。

Step 3 - The Firing
Wet sand is laid on a battered metal plate which has numerous holes drilled in its base ....
Beads are arranged on the sand .. pic shows the bead that was made for the demonstration in the middle of two already fired beads. One firing plate can accommodate 70 beads of the size shown or 100 of the smaller spheres - shown in the large white bowl on page 1.





将木炭覆盖在锅盖上,并进行燃烧约2小时。



A metal bowl, similarly well-used and battered, is placed on top as a lid.
The whole assembly is carefully covered in charcoal, taken outside and laid on a bed of charcoal which is set alight and the beads left in the surrounding fire for 2 hours.
